Guest Post: Dogsledding Adventure in Juneau

Alaska is a fascinating destination filled with unspoiled wilderness and natural wonders. Our expertly crafted shore excursions invite you to immerse yourself in the region and truly embrace the landscape and culture that surrounds you. Two of our guests, Greg & Joan R., recently shared their memorable dogsledding experience in Juneau from their Alaska cruise last summer. Read about their excursion below – the perfect inspiration to begin planning your own Alaska voyage.

Dog-SleddingOn our most recent cruise to Alaska, my wife, Joan, and I decided to try a dogsledding and flightseeing excursion while in Juneau. We had actually been to Alaska once before – long ago when our kids were young – but what a unique way to explore this incredible landscape. Not only is dogsledding an Alaskan tradition, but it’s a bit of state obsession as well, as we discovered on this tour. The official Iditarod Dog Sled Race takes place every March, running the 1,150-mile route from Anchorage to Nome. On this excursion, we had the chance to meet Iditarod mushers and their dogs – and then experience dogsledding firsthand.

helicopterWe started the day off with a thrilling helicopter tour over the glaciers of Southeast Alaska – truly spectacular! Lush green forests surrounded by deep blue ice valleys and peaks. I was a bit nervous about the helicopter ride, but the views were so breathtaking that I was completely overcome – and we were descending before I knew it.

Upon arriving at the dogsled camp on Mendenhall Glacier, we met the professional mushers and dogs. The huskies happily greeted us and then we had the choice to either drive the team or take in the fantastic scenery from the sled. Joan wanted drive, so I settled in for the ride. Off we went, among the peaks and valleys of this great glacier, the dogs energetically bounding the entire way. Joan got a kick out of driving and I did my best to document the adventure.

alaskaAfterwards, we had a chance to meet the new pups and pet them, which Joan just loved. What an incredible experience – this afternoon was definitely a highlight of our voyage. It’s especially fun if you like dogs, and we certainly are dog lovers. Then after a few more photos, it was time to hop back on the helicopter for one more glimpse of the amazing landscape surrounding Juneau.

If you’re going on an Alaska cruise this summer, don’t miss out on this true Alaskan adventure!
